Raffle Winners

There were some big winners as Robert Hooper won $53 in the February raffle
and Jack McHugh won a mind-boggling $92 in the March raffle.
The winner gets half the money collected for the raffle, with the other half
going into the club treasury. Tickets may be purchased from the club
treasurer when dues are collected or at any time before the drawing. Tickets
cost $2 apiece, $4 for three, or $6 for five. A real bargain!

Club Finances and Attendance

41 paying members and 1 visitor attended the February meeting. $195 in dues
was collected. In addition, the raffle added $47 dollars to the treasury. $8
in prepaid dues was used, lowering the prepaid-dues balance to $444. Club
expenses were $178.20 for room rental and $27.25 for newsletter publication.
There was a net $2 in miscellaneous expenses. The club cash balance was up
$70.55 to $1116.82
An astounding 61 paying members attended the March meeting. $295 in dues was
collected. In addition, the raffle added $86 to the treasury and there was
$5 in miscellaneous income. $8 in prepaid dues was used, lowering the
prepaid-dues balance to $436. The only club expense was $178.20 for room
rental. The club cash balance was up $207.80 to a total of $1324.62

Extra Meetings to be Held

Due to popular demand, EPGS is holding a series of extra meetings for those
members who just can't get enough of a good thing. These meetings take place
in the Community Room on the second floor of the Oxford Valley Mall. Here's
the schedule:

May 5th, 2001
August 4th, 2001
November 3rd, 2001

$2 dues are collected from current members to cover room rental. New
recruits may attend free of charge. The February 3rd meeting was a smashing
success! So, come on out and bring your friends!

EPGS Mailing List

For nearly a year now, EPGS has had a mailing list maintained by Jerry
Smolens. There has been little traffic on this list, mainly because there
are only 23 members so far.

The concept is simple. When a member sends a message to
epgs@yahoogroups.com, the message is sent to all members of the list. If
traffic on this list should become considerable, there is also an option to
receive the posts once a day in a "digest" format.

This list should help members to organize games either at meetings or other
times; arrange rides to and from meetings, conventions or tournaments; to
buy or sell games; or to just talk about games.

To subscribe to the list, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/epgs or simply
send an email to: epgs-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

(Note: due to the process of "the big fish swallowing the little fish",
Internet style, this group has changed hosts twice. You may be required to
start a Yahoo account to use the web features. They have included a
"Conversion Wizard" to facilitate this process.)

Hope to meet you online soon!

May 1809 meeting engagement between an Austrian corps and a French corps.
The French infantry advanced cautiously towards Diendorf
while their light cavalry tried to go wide around the left flank and the
Cuirassiers went up the right side. The Austrian cavalry, a mix of heavies
and lights, met the French heavy cav and made it pull back with one regiment
destroyed and the others badly beat up, but Hesse-Darmstadt cavalry arrived
and hit the spent Austrian cav and forced them to withdraw. The light
cavalry ran into a line of
Austrian grenadiers in square and could go no further while the French
infantry suffered heavy casualties from the more numerous Austrian
artillery. The French finally broke into Diendorf after a bloody battle and
forced the Austrians to retire for the day.

March meeting - WW2 aircraft, 2 games played from Battle of Britain period.
There were two German bombing raids first by He-111's, then
by Ju-88's with Bf-109's and Bf-110's escorting. The RAF intercepted with
Spitfires and Hurricanes.
The RAF destroyed 75% of the first raid and suffered 70% losses and
destroyed 30% of the second raid while suffering 50% losses. Not a
good day for the RAF.

Last chance to enter the 2001 EPGS Axis & Allies and Axis & Allies: Europe
Tournaments

From Bob Hranek

The format, costs, and prizes will be virtually identical to the "16
December 2000 EPGS Axis & Allies: Europe Tournament" (check the December
2000 / January 2001 newsletter at www.epgs.org for details).  Any number of
players may enter either tournament until the end of the April 2001 meeting.
$5 for one or $10 for both.

The major difference for both tournaments is that games will be played from
Feb thru Dec 2001 EPGS meetings and that it will take two losses before
you'll be knocked out of a tournament.  I will organize the two player games
into a winners ladder and a 2nd chance ladder based on player availability
at each session.  Tournament games can be played even if I'm not present,
but both players must notify me of the results afterwards and then I'll
incorporate the results into my ladder as best I can.  Players should keep
track of their losses.  If they haven't lost yet, then they should only play
other players that haven't lost yet.  If they have lost 1 game, then they
should only play others that have also lost 1 game.  This will be loosely
organized until the fall, when I'll start to organize specific opponents to
play each other.  The overall winner of both tournaments will be known by
the end of the December meeting.

Players of the original Axis & Allies game must be familiar with our
standard EPGS A&A rules (check the April / May 2000 newsletter at
www.epgs.org for details or obtain a hardcopy from your treasurer as you pay
your dues).  The only option in effect for tournament games will be no
Russian turn 1 attacks.  I believe this completely balances the game, but to
placate those that might disagree, the following bidding scheme will also be
used.  Both players shall write down how many extra IPCs they're willing to
take the Axis with.  This money comes from the Allies starting IPCs (Allied
choice) and is divided between the Axis (Axis choice).  A negative bid means
you're willing to take the Axis and give the Allies some of your starting
IPCs!  This money is only changes the starting IPCs, it may not be used to
purchase any additional starting units.  The low bidder plays the Axis.  For
a tie bid one of you rolls a die:  odd and you're the Allies.

More than one player may sign up as a team, but they will be treated a one
player for the duration of the tournament and may not register individually
later.  Giving advice to players in a tournament game is forbidden and may
cause you to be thrown out of all tournaments.  There will be no refunds for
those unwilling or unable to finish a tournament.  The reason for spreading
the tournaments out throughout the year is to allow as many players to
participate as possible, to avoid the rush of trying to complete all games
in a single session, and to lower your treasurer's stress level

Panzerblitz Playtesting

A few Panzerblitz playtesters are still needed. If you are interested in
helping playtest this material, see Eric Miller at the April meeting. Only a
few vacancies are available, as this group will be small. So, if you are
interested make sure you speak up! Eric can be reached at
emmiller@verizon.net.

GMT Games Available

As a representative of GMT Games, I have a small inventory of items on-hand.
A list of these titles, with prices, is available at the following URL:
www.net-gate.com/~mpnagel/gmtgames/gmtstockonhand.htm

Members interested in acquiring any titles in this stock (particularly
those which are out of print) are encouraged to contact me at
mpnagel@home.com.  I'd be happy to bring them to a meeting to avoid both
shipping charges and sales tax.

Blair Gaming

EPGS Members,
My name's Tom Parauda.  I'm trying to arrange a board-gaming weekend this
summer at Blair Academy, a private boarding school at which I teach. Same
format as EPGS sessions. I'm asking for date and lodging preferences from
EPGS members who feel they would like to make the trip to Blairstown, NJ,
for an inexpensive day/weekend of gaming in very good facilities.  I'll be
paying the rental fee for facilities; you pay the fees listed below for
lodging, if you plan on staying (the school's costs, not mine).  If you have
any interest, please e-mail me with your preferences (paraut@blair.edu).
Also, this event is open to all who wish to come, not only EPGS members.
Invite anyone you want to, but I'd love to know the # of your party.  I'll
have any and all of you!  Any response at all is appreciated and helpful.

A sample e-mail response:
Sure, I'm game. And I'll bring 1 other.

Lodging Options
Option A: "bare bones"- includes Air Conditioned facility rental, entry to
all gaming sessions, dorm stay (but no linen, "hall" bathrooms, no meals, no
AC, double occupancy)
Total Cost Estimate: $20-25 plus meals (single room: $25-35) This particular
option could be even less $ if there's enough takers.

Option B: "with linen"- as in option A, but with linen.
Total Cost Estimate: $30-35 plus meals (single room: $35-45)

Option C: as in option A, but with linen and air-conditioned single
occupancy room (or adjoining singles) in our nicest, most modern
dormitory-beautiful!
Total Cost Estimate: $40-50 plus meals

Note: the cost of lodging is the same whether it's for one night or for two.
Yes, the same costs as for a one-night stay.  However, don't therefore
commit to "Plan 3" too quickly unless you feel you can most likely be there
Friday night.  I'd hate to open the facilities for only a handful of people.
But it does make financial sense to do this if we have enough takers.

There is also the option to open the dining hall for meals (an extra, but
reasonable, cost), but I'll consider that only if I find the response
justifies doing so.  Please get back to me even if you're only interested in
the day trip!
